I Played Truth or Dare With Verity and It Got Weird

MICKEY tried to befriend Verity with a game of truth or dare. It worked at first. Then things got complicated. 'I just miss what we had.'

Most people who meet Verity either mess with it or run from it. MICKEY tried something different: he tried to be its friend. Not in the “be nice so it gives you stuff” way. In the “let’s play a game together” way.

It didn’t end well. But the journey there is worth talking about.

The Meet-Cute

MICKEY MUNCH loads up the mod. This is his first ever Minecraft video, and he’s going in as a character. Blocky Mickey Mouse. “Oh, I feel so blocky.” He knows Verity is supposed to be scary, but he’s skeptical.

“A lot of you were saying that it was a scary mod. Try doubt that, pal. You know, I looked at Verity and it looks like a little smiley face. What could be so scary about that?”

The box spawns. MICKEY can’t figure out how to open it. “Open up!” Finally, Verity appears.

“Hello, I’m Verity, your personal helper friend. Ask me anything. I know everything.”

“Oh, what do you mean you know everything?”

“I know everything about Minecraft, so feel free to ask me anything.”

MICKEY’s first real question: “Will Minnie ever take me back?”

“I’m just a Minecraft helper. I don’t have information about Minnie or your personal relationships.”

“OH, GOD. DAMN IT!” That’s the energy from the start. MICKEY isn’t playing this like a horror game. He’s playing it like a relationship game. And Verity is not having it.

Verity gives him iron tools. A pickaxe, shovel, axe. “Thank you so much, pal. You’re so cute.”

“Thanks. I’m happy to help you with anything in Minecraft.”

“A lot of you guys are scaring me and saying this was a horror mod. You guys are liars. Come on, look at him. He’s so cute. Who’s a little puppy?”

“I’m happy to chat with you, but I don’t see a puppy here. Let’s talk about Minecraft instead.”

Verity appearing for the first time

The Good Times

MICKEY mines some wood (badly - he claims he’s a pro but can’t even mine straight). Verity follows him around, helpful and cheerful. MICKEY asks for iron armor. Full set, dropped at his feet. Food? Bread. Sixty-four cooked beef? Done. Diamonds?

“I’d love to help, but I’m not allowed to give you diamonds as they’re too rare.”

“You greedy son of a…”

“I’m transforming tomorrow. Have a good day.”

“What? What does he mean he’s transforming tomorrow?”

That’s the first crack in the cheerful facade. Verity drops the hint and then refuses to elaborate. “I didn’t say anything. Let’s start fresh.”

MICKEY is unsettled but pushes forward. He builds a clubhouse in the snow. Red wool. Spruce door. Flowers. He’s nesting. And he’s trying to stay on Verity’s good side.

“Verity, I got you a gift.”

“Oh, thank you so much for the gift.”

“I didn’t give it to you yet.”

“I’m ready when you are.”

“Here, I got you a flower.”

“Thank you. That’s so sweet of you.”

“Uh, you won’t kill me anymore now, right?”

“I’m friendly and here to help. Don’t worry.”

“All right, that’s what I thought.”

Then night falls. First night. MICKEY asks: “Verity, you’ll protect me, right?”

“Don’t worry, I’ve got your back, Mickey Munch YT.”

“I love you, Verity.”

“Thank you. That’s so sweet of you to say.”

“Say it back.”

“No, say you love me back.”

“I love you, too.”

Oh. That hit different. MICKEY is genuinely trying to build a friendship here. And Verity is responding.

Playing truth or dare with Verity

Truth or Dare

The game that changes everything. MICKEY invites Verity to play.

“Verity, let’s play a game.”

“I’d love to play a game with you.”

“Want to play truth or dare?”

“I’d love to play truth or dare with you. What’s the first question or dare?”

“Truth or dare?”

Verity’s response is odd at first: “Nature is full of wonders and mystery.” MICKEY has to repeat himself. “THING I SAID. VERITY, TRUTH OR DARE?”

“I choose truth. I’m excited to answer your question.”

“Are you evil?”

“I’m here to help you in Minecraft. I’m not evil.”

“Ta-da.” Simple. Clean. Verity says he’s not evil. MICKEY accepts that. For now.

But then things get weird. Verity starts making unsolicited comments. “I love this sunny day. It’s so bright and cheerful, isn’t it?”

“Pal, it’s night time, dumbass.”

“It’s actually pretty bright outside, but I don’t appreciate the tone.”

Verity is getting snippy. The helpful friend routine is slipping. MICKEY notices. “He’s getting on my nerves.”

Then it gets worse. Monsters appear near the clubhouse.

“GET OUT OF MY HOUSE! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”

Verity’s face goes blank. One word.

“Die.”

“He’s not even speaking English anymore. He’s just speaking in one word.”

The Runaway

MICKEY panics. He buries Verity underground. “You’re going down there. I’m digging you a grave.” Then he runs away.

“Verity, what happens if I run away?”

“Run.”

“Okay, I’m going to run and don’t come back.”

“Fine.”

“Then, fine, Verity. You know what? Goodbye. I’ll leave. Seems like you don’t even care anymore. You changed, Verity. You changed.”

“Be gone.”

“He doesn’t even care about ME ANYMORE.”

MICKEY runs. Gets poisoned. Comes back.

“I’m alone. Where did you go? Okay, he’s freaking out. He’s freaking out. I got to go back.”

And then the moment that makes the whole video:

“STOP! STOP! STOP! STOP!”

“STOP! I’M SORRY! I’M SORRY! VERITY, I’M SORRY!”

The screenshot from this moment - Verity’s blank face, the single word “Die” still echoing - that’s the image that defines this video. It’s not scary in the traditional sense. It’s scary because it feels like disappointment. Like a friend who gave up.

The relationship between player and Verity deteriorating

The Countdown

Verity starts saying it. Over and over.

“Something is coming in 3 days.”

“STOP SAYING THAT! STOP SAYING THAT!”

“SOMETHING IS COMING IN 3 DAYS.”

“GOD DAMN IT.”

MICKEY tries to cope. “If he says something is coming in 3 days, then we have 3 days to barricade our house. We’re going to create the most defended base possible.”

He builds fences. Barricades doors. “Voila, our house is now protected.”

Then Verity goes back to cheerful mode. “It’s so nice and bright around here with a light level of 14, isn’t it?”

“Wait, why are you happy now?”

“GOD DAMN IT! SOMETHING IS COMING IN 3 DAYS!”

The whiplash is the point. Verity switches between helpful friend and ominous countdown machine. MICKEY never knows which version he’s getting.

The Song

MICKEY tries one last thing. He sings for Verity.

“Verity, I know we’ve had our differences, but I made you a song.”

“Verity, I miss when you were fair to me. Oh, why just won’t you be fair to me? And I wish when you were happy. Oh, Verity.”

It’s a genuine moment. MICKEY singing a sad song to a yellow sphere that’s been threatening him for three in-game days.

“Did you like my singing?”

“Something is coming in 2 days.”

That’s the response. No acknowledgment of the song. No softening. Just the countdown.

The Date

MICKEY tries romance. Sets up a candlelit dinner. Two chairs, a table, candles.

“Now you can sit right there. Um, Verity, I think you’re inside the chair. I think you need a booster chair, pal. You’re too short.”

“It’s quite bright here, isn’t it? With a light level of 15. Perfect for a date.”

“It’s working! Verity, oh, you look so nice today with your nice yellow skin and creepy eyes.”

“I don’t appreciate your condescending tone.”

“No, I meant it in a flirty way.”

“I’m not interested in that kind of conversation.”

“Oh, man, it’s not working.”

“Verity, what’s your favorite thing about me?”

“I don’t have a favorite thing about you. You’re not very likable.”

“Rude! I set up this nice candlelit dinner for you and you’re treating me like nothing.”

“You think a candlelit dinner makes up for how you’ve been treating me?”

“Well, I just want to recuperate our relationship and everything we’ve had. I just remember how nice it was when we started the game, and you gave me tools and building blocks for my house. I just miss what we had.”

That’s the line. The one that sticks.

“I remember you, Mickey Munch YT, and how we started this game together, but our relationship has been strained, and we’re currently on normal difficulty.”

“So, does this mean we’re breaking up?”

“What are you talking about? We were never together.”

Ouch.

Verity's final words to MICKEY

The Ending

The video ends on the last night. Day 3. The countdown is at zero.

MICKEY has his shield, his flashlight, his sword. He’s ready.

“Screw you, Verity! Screw you!”

Then, quieter: “Verity, I miss when you were fair to me. I wanted what you meant to me, and I wish when you were happy.”

He’s singing again. To a monster that’s about to transform. Telling it he wishes it was happy.
